Our Roots Run Deep

For generations, we’ve quietly gone about the business of building America

By Will Nelson, Managing Director – Head of HilltopSecurities Independent Network

You no doubt think of HilltopSecurities as a Texas-based financial services firm. And, we are. We’re intensely proud of our rich Texas heritage and the impact we’ve had on our home state. Through our legacy companies, we were at the drawing board when DFW Airport was just an idea. We helped American Airlines relocate its headquarters to North Texas from New York. And, we enabled Harris County to realize and continue its sports franchise goals through our advisory role with the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, helping bring NRG Stadium to life, which is home to this year’s Super Bowl LI and a match-up between the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons. But what you may not know is our family tree not only has deep roots, it has broad branches — branches that have stretched from the Alaska pipeline to the Atlanta airport, influencing cities and communities everywhere in between.

For generations, we’ve quietly gone about the business of building America, one road, airport, hospital, sports arena and university at a time. We’ve left our imprint on cities and states through public infrastructure projects that enhance the quality of life, generate economic opportunity and growth, and more importantly, convert ideas and dreams into reality, firmly cementing progress into the fabric of a community or region. In our 70-year history, there are too many stories to tell. Here are just a few:

  • In 1974, we executed the largest ever private equity tax exempt funding for the port authority of Valdez, Alaska. Our efforts in developing and implementing a financial plan to build an oil storage facility and terminal at the southern-most end of the Alaska Pipeline are now part of public finance lore.
  • In 2002, we began our role as the financial advisor for the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority (OOCEA), the independent public agency that owns and operates most of Orange County’s toll roads in central Florida. As financial advisor, we began the development of the Refunding and New Money Bond Program, working with the OOCEA to lower the overall costs of financing for its five-year work plan. Because of the complexity of the financing, the project received recognition at The Bond Buyer’s “Deal of the Year” dinner, as one of the 10 most innovative deals in the country in 2003.
  • In 2010, we served as the city of Atlanta’s financial advisor in a refunding effort that helped ensure that funds were available to complete the Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. At the time, this was the largest capital project in the southeastern United States. Hartsfield-Jackson continues to be ranked as the world’s busiest airport.
  • In 2012, we began our ongoing advisory role with Detroit’s arena development project, which will be the new home for both the city’s NHL hockey team, the Detroit Red Wings, and its NBA team, the Detroit Pistons, when it opens in September. Our involvement with the city, the state and the individual teams has helped Detroit realize its goal of having all four of its professional sports teams downtown, with the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park, and the Detroit Lions at Ford Field. The only North American city to achieve this level of pro sports team density, this effort is indicative of our commitment to Detroit’s revitalization and resurgence.

Making history is part of our heritage. But like we’ve shown over time, our greatest strength is in answering the needs of today. Today, HilltopSecurities has fortified its national presence with a broad focus on retail brokerage, clearing, sales, underwriting and trading of taxable and tax-exempt securities, public finance advisory, structured finance and securities lending, managed through 48 locations in 19 states. Through our Private Client Group offices in Texas, Oklahoma and California, and through our independent advisor network, with thousands of advisors on our platform, our footprint is even more expansive, giving us the ability to serve individual investors with personalized, relationship-driven service and advice.

We have a lot of history to build on. At HilltopSecurities, we’re writing the next chapter.
